Rightist Akmal Slammed For Politicising Uec Casting Unfounded Fear Of Uec A Threat To National Edu Policy

THAT not only Sabah and Sarawak have recognised the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) ‘with some tweaking’ but also the world’s top ivory towers notably Oxford, Cambridge and the National University of Singapore (NUS) are testament that UEC can be accorded conditional acceptance.
After all, apart from SPM and STPM, O-level and A-level certificates as well as IGCSE are already recognised for entry into Malaysian public and private universities despite being in English medium.
Modelling after Sabah and Sarawak, DAP lawmaker Young Syefura Othman a.k.a. Rara sees no harm if UEC’s recognition is accompanied by the condition of obtaining credit in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and History subjects at SPM level.
“In fact, I was informed that many UEC students also took all SPM subjects and obtained straight A’s,” she penned on X as DAP national deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming is reportedly set to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the party’s bid to get UEC recognised.

“Like O-Level and IGCSE, UEC is today accepted internationally by, among others, Oxford University, University of Cambridge, Australian National University, Kyoto University, California Institute of Technology and Peking University.”
Restricting opportunities
Added the Bentong MP and DAP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) member:
“Therefore, we shouldn’t prevent our children regardless of their racial or religious background from excelling by obtaining recognised educational pathways both locally and abroad.
“I call for any discussion on this matter to be conducted in a prudent manner and not in a racially political manner that would only affect the future of our children.”
This counter argument is directed at firebrand UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who is adamant that “there should be no compromise whatsoever on UEC’s acceptance” given it breaches the national education policy which prioritises the use of BM as the core medium of instruction.
On this note, DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) assistant publicity secretary Syaheera Ghafar hit out at the staunch defender of race and religion over his hypocritical statement in rejecting UEC on the basis that it could jeopardise racial integration in Malaysia “without any strong opposition towards O-Level and IGCSE”.
“In fact, Mandarin is today the second most widely spoken language in the world after English with 1.118 billion people using it as their first and second language in their daily lives,” she justified in a social media post.
“So why are we opposing UEC to restrict opportunities for children in Malaysia regardless of race and religion to explore other greater opportunities?”
‘Damage is done’
Even former PKR deputy president-turned-Madani critic Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has opened up that instead of previously nipping in the bud, allowing Akmal “to run wild over the past two years” has sent a very detrimental signal to Chinese voters who have been core backers of the Madani government.
“For me, this is a political misreading. UMNO let him run wild to re-capture the spirit of the old UMNO. In the government, everyone pretends not to touch him because they supposedly want to maintain ‘stability’,” lamented the former economy minister and Pandan MP.
Masa masih jadi Menteri dulu, banyak benda kami terpaksa telan.
Saya cerita terus terang pasal satu benda yang saya rasa kerajaan silap baca dari awal: cara kita biarkan episod Dr Akmal Saleh ni “meliar” sejak dua tahun lepas.

“PMX as the head of the unity government seems too cautious to reprimand (Akmal). Everything is calculated from the perspective of how to safeguard the PM’s position.
“When that happens, the message that reaches voters is one’s position in the government is more important than principles. In short, I think the damage is done.”
Well, many other presumably far-sighted Malays do agree with Rara, Syaheera and Rafizi. – Dec 12, 2025
Saya tanya Google, Google jawab 300 universiti menerima keputusan peperiksaan UEC termasuk Oxford, Cambridge, NUS, dll.
Senarai penuh di pautan ini : https://t.co/L49inEIPzY
Kesimpulannya, sepatutnya tiada isu untuk iktiraf UEC. https://t.co/9jnSBP7KmG pic.twitter.com/Q6urKAryvV

To be fair, I agree with YB Rara, kalau negara lain dah iktiraf UEC, Malaysia pun patut iktiraf.
Tambah je la syarat kena lulus subjek BM dan Sejarah. Tu je.
MRSM siap ada yang buat IGCSE dan sekolah swasta kat Malaysia kebanyakkan buat O-level/A-level.
Jangan jadi rasis. https://t.co/DZ1ScU2KQ0
