Warisan president Shafie Apdal said amendments need to be made to anti-party hopping legislation to tie up loopholes.KOTA KINABALU: MPs should stop declaring their support for other leaders, Warisan president Shafie Apdal said.
The Semporna MP said such a trend should not be allowed to persist because it does not reflect the democratic process.
“It should not be encouraged because I believe in the mandate of the people.
“I am also confident that every parliamentary constituency will receive funding as part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP),” Utusan Malaysia quoted Shafie as saying.
“Allocations for education, health, and electricity supply are already included in the 12MP, which means that opposition parliamentary constituencies will not be left behind.”
Shafie added that if MPs wanted to be bipartisan – as they are in Western countries – they can support government motions in the people’s interests.
“The anti-party hopping law has been established, so do not tarnish it. There are now those who support other leaders, but do not encourage this,” he said after a Warisan Youth meeting today.
He further commented that it may be time for the government to refine the gaps in the existing Constitution (Amendment) (No 3) Act 2022 so that automatic by-elections are held when MPs switch their support.
Shafie said he had raised the issue in the electoral committee through Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking, adding that there were subsections that needed improvement.
