Span Several Northern Dams Level At Alert Status

Several water dams in the northern parts of Malaysia are showing a downward trend and have reached alert levels, said the National Water Services Commission (Span).
It said that there are five dams in Perlis namely Timah Tasoh Dam, one in Penang namely Air Hitam Dam, and three in Kedah namely Muda, BS Padang Saga and Empangan Malut.
"At present, the water supply at the dams has not reached critical levels.
"For water supply services in the Central Region (Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya), the overall seven dams and three main rivers in Selangor have recorded maximum dam or river levels.
"This allows all 34 water treatment plants to operate at normal capacity," it added.
Referring to operations in the East Coast Region (Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang), it said that most dams or rivers are at stable levels and all water treatment plants are operating at normal capacity except for the Kelar plant in Kelantan which has recorded a decline due to depletion of raw water sources.
Several areas in Kelantan also experiencing low water pressure due to the decline in raw water supply sources, especially from underground sources.
In the Southern Region (Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca), only the Sembrong Barat Dam (current dam level - 31.37 percent) in Johor is at an alert level. However, this does not affect the production of treated water at the Sembrong Barat plant.
For the current water supply situation in Labuan, it said that the Sungai Pagar Dam has experienced depletion and the operator has taken mitigating measures, including placing static tanks at strategic locations and providing water tanker supply assistance as needed. Currently, the Sungai Pagar plant is still operating with normal production output.
Span anticipated that water supply demand would increase between 10 percent to 15 percent from current production levels during the festive season, especially in the northern, east coast and southern states, except for major cities like the Klang Valley, Georgetown and Johor Bahru which are expected to decline.
Overall, the water supply remains controlled in most states. However, Span does not rule out any potential disruptions should the downward trend continue in the coming weeks.
