Contradictory Versions Emerge Of Socks Supplier S Licensing Status
The licensing status of Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, which supplied the controversial socks bearing the word “Allah” to convenience store chain KK Mart, has come into question.
This is because three different accounts on the status of the Batu Pahat-based company's operating licence have emerged so far.
The first account came from a statement issued by the Batu Pahat Municipal Council after a meeting with representatives from the factory.
According to the statement, the council president Ezahar Abu Sairin handed a notice to revoke the company's licence, following the controversy.
Xin Jian Chang issued a clarification the following day, stating that the council had not revoked its operating licence, but had instead given them 30 days to submit a written statement before deciding on the matter.
According to the company, its operating licence remains valid until the written submission is considered upon.
This was echoed by MCA's Batu Pahat local councillor whip Ter Hwa Kwong, who confirmed with Malaysiakini about the 30-day notice period.
However, a third account emerged yesterday, from Johor executive councillor Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, who said that Xin Jian Chang had been given 60 days to explain to the local council why its business licence should not be revoked and its factory shut down.
MCA's Batu Pahat local councillor whip Ter Hwa KwongJasni, who is in charge of state housing and local government committee, told Bernama that investigations showed that the company had violated the terms of the business licence granted by MPBP, which is for a shoe storage and distribution facility.
"The factory is supposed to engage only in the storage and distribution of shoes but was involved in the packaging of socks and gloves, which was not included in its licence application. This is why a notice of licence cancellation and premises closure was issued to them," he said.
Malaysiakini has reached out to Ezahar to inquire about the actual licensing status of Xin Jian Chang, amid the contradictory versions. - Mkini
