Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described several high-profile prosecutions in 2018 as being “rushed” and tainted by “venom and enmity.”
Speaking at a press conference in Subang today, Anwar addressed the recent acquittal of Rosmah Mansor on money laundering charges, stressing that he had no involvement in the court’s decision.
“You must also know that time the pace of prosecution taking place all done in a hurry, with venom, enmity and political vengeance with those in power at that time so many of the prosecutions were flawed,” he said.
His remarks came after Rosmah, the wife of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, was acquitted of 12 money laundering charges and five counts of failing to declare income to the Inland Revenue Board.
The judge had allowed Rosmah’s bid to quash the case on the grounds that the charges were defective and failed to disclose the essential elements of the alleged offences.
‘Why ask me?’
Anwar reiterated today that he did not have a hand in the ruling.
“Why (ask me about Rosmah’s case outcome)? Do you want me to interfere in the judicial process? I have my personal view and I have my personal reasons, whether I like it or dislike it.
“But we have to talk about judicial independence. How do you want judicial independence?
“Secondly, when the judge gives a different decision, you blame others, you disagree with the decision,” he said.
He stressed that the prosecution also disagreed with the ruling and is hence appealing Rosmah's acquittal.
He also lamented criticism against him regarding legal cases as absurd and hypocritical.
Anwar said that as prime minister, he is cautious about expressing personal views on legal matters, adding that the court’s independence must be respected.
“I have my views, but I cannot interfere,” he repeated.
“You can ask the CJ (chief of justice), two years in office, I have not interfered in any case, interfered with any judge on any issue. You tell me has that happened in the past?” he concluded. - Mkini
