A lawyer aligned with Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned why Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim did not make any noise about the "rushed" prosecution back in 2018.
This is after Anwar today said that several cases from then were "flawed" due to rushed and politically vengeful prosecution.
"Why now? Why the silence since 2018?" Rafique Rashid Ali said in a statement today.
"After all, this is a man who has been labelled on the same pedestal as (Mahatma) Gandhi and (Nelson) Mandela. A reformist who will speak without fear or favour," added the Pejuang information chief.
Rafique (above) also alleged that Anwar had inadvertently "taken over" the attorney-general's role by making such comments.
Anwar's remarks came in the wake of Rosmah Mansor’s acquittal in her money laundering and tax evasion charges.
The judge allowed Rosmah’s bid to quash the case on the grounds that the charges were defective and failed to disclose the essential elements of the alleged offences.
Anwar has maintained that he did not interfere in the case while highlighting that prosecutors are appealing against the acquittal.
Creating doubt
Rafique, however, accused the prime minister of trying to create doubt over cases involving Umno politicians that originated in 2018, so as to maintain his grip on power.
Previously in September 2023, Anwar said the Yayasan Akalbudi corruption charges against Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - who is his deputy prime minister - were questionable and not professionally carried out while implying it was politically motivated.
