Sinkhole On Jalan Burma Linked To Sewer Collapse Iwk

Contrary to earlier reports, IWK said the collapse was not related to ageing infrastructure or a force main failure.
"The joint dislocation, which can occur unexpectedly under heavy loads, triggered the road collapse, prompting immediate safety measures including the temporary closure of the affected section of Jalan Burma.
"Repair works have been underway since the incident and are expected to continue for another four days.
"IWK is continuing our investigations to confirm the root cause while simultaneously advancing a large-scale sewerage upgrade and refurbishment project across Penang island," it said in a statement.
IWK said that as part of the Malaysian Plan under the Department of Sewerage Services (JPP), comprehensive CCTV inspections and Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) scanning are being conducted to assess the condition of sewer lines island-wide.
It said the upgrade project, funded through the Sewerage Capital Contribution (SCC) fund, involves RM284.7 million in investments to improve the 297km pipeline network, addressing ageing infrastructure and enhancing public safety.
"All necessary steps are being taken to resolve the Jalan Burma issue promptly and safely.
"We thank the community for their understanding during the ongoing repairs," IWK added.
Earlier today, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said repair works on the broken sewer pipe that caused the sinkhole were expected to take five days to complete.
He said the works would be carried out in phases to reduce traffic congestion in the affected area.
