Silat Group Gets Hit With Rm24 000 Fines For Sop Missteps

Police say the men, aged between 26 and 51, had violated the movement control order SOPs.PETALING JAYA: Eight men were slapped with compounds totalling RM24,000 for violating lockdown SOPs by gathering and participating in group silat activities at a house in Bandar Utama, here, early today.
Seven of them were compounded RM2,000 each for gathering while the house owner was issued a RM10,000 compound for hosting the activity, district police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said, adding that the men were aged between 26 and 51.
“Following a public tip-off, police raided the location at 12.10am and found that the men were conducting the (silat) activity in a group.
“They were compounded under Rule 17 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures in Local Areas of Infection) Regulations 2021,” he said in a statement.
Fakhrudin also warned the public to ensure all MCO3.0 SOPs were adhered to or risk being slapped with compound notices.
Meanwhile, two Indonesian men were jailed for 20 days each by a magistrates’ court here for violating SOPs by working at a snooker centre.
Magistrate Muhammad Iskandar Zainol meted out the punishment today on Vinoris Mendonca Amaral, 27, and Yuvanalis Manek, 26, after they pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the health directives by working at a snooker centre in Damansara Jaya, here, at 4pm on May 30.
They were charged with violating Rule 9 of the infectious diseases regulations 2021, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of six months, or both.
The court ordered the two accused to serve their jail terms starting from the date of arrests on May 30.
In mitigation, the duo, who were not represented, pleaded for a light sentence, saying they had families to support in Indonesia, but deputy public prosecutor Zamriah Zarifah Aris urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.
In Kuala Lumpur, police issued an employer a compound of RM10,000 for letting his workers board his company bus in excess of the 50% capacity permitted under SOPs during the lockdown.
Dang Wangi district police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the compound was issued when police stopped the bus and found that it was ferrying 34 Bangladeshi construction workers at Jalan Tun HS Lee at about 7.30am today.
He said all public transport vehicles are only allowed with 50% passenger capacity in accordance with the SOPs.
“The bus has a capacity of 44 passengers but the employer allowed 34 of them to board the bus. That’s 77% (and exceeds) the total capacity allowed.
“The bus driver, a 40-year-old local, was issued a RM2,000 compound,” he told reporters at the Tun HS Lee police station today.
He said the compliance rate in the Dang Wangi district was satisfactory, with only 102 compounds issued for various SOP violations from June 1 until today. - FMT
