Shortening Ums Vc Term Is A Form Of Persecution Says Sabah Umno
KOTA KINABALU: Umno Supreme Council member Rahman Dahlan has questioned the decision to shorten the term of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) vice-chancellor without any reason
Speaking to reporters after hosting the Tuaran Umno Hari Raya open house here today, Rahman said such action is unnecessary, especially because the vice-chancellor, Prof Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin has proven to be a capable leader and was dedicated to his work in the university
“Kamarudin has just one more year to complete his term. Why can’t the government wait? Why is it so desperate to replace him now?”Rahman said Kamarudin, who is a Sabahan, had done a tremendous job in the university and is known to be a person of integrity, carrying out his job fairly and always “by the book”
He speculated that perhaps this trait of following the rules has caused some people to view Kamarudin as an “enemy” by some people
A former anaesthetist, Kamarudin was appointed to the chair on June 19, 2017, becoming only the third Sabahan to hold the post. He will leave the office on July 29, one year earlier
Prof Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin.Kamarudin had successfully improved UMS’ ranking to 206th in the Asian University Rankings. Rahman said the education ministry may have overlooked this achievement
Rahman was left wondering why the government was in such a hurry to get rid of Kamarudin despite his obvious good work
“We don’t want them to make a decision only to please certain people
“Kamarudin is always known to be a strict person and did not even give in to pressure during BN’s time. It is so hard to get anything from him
“The state government must fight to retain Kamarudin in his post because his leadership has proven to be beneficial for the university.”On Sabah Umno, Rahman, who is also Tuaran Umno chief, said the party will soon organise a tour around Sabah to meet the people and listen to their problems and issues
He said the state’s economy was in a dire state and the people were suffering because of the lack of direction by the state government
“It has been more than a year now and the Sabah government still does not have a concrete plan of how it wants to bring Sabah forward
“The condition at the federal level is even worse. Our national debt has been rising and the federal government has added RM100 billion to the existing debt
“The country’s economy is getting worse at all levels but Sabah is not prepared because we do not have any direction,” he said
The open house was attended by some 2,000 guests, including former chief minister Musa Aman. - FMT
