Shafee Says No Plans To File New Pardon Bid For Najib For Now

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s defence team has not received any instruction to file a fresh pardon application, said his lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
ADSSpeaking to reporters today, he said they will continue to pursue Najib’s case in court regarding the alleged royal addendum first before making any further decision.
According to Shafee, filing a fresh application with the Pardons Board can also jeopardise Najib’s court case.
“At this moment we have no instructions (to file a fresh application).
“But I can tell you because we are pursuing the addendum, which is a subject matter of pardon application, (which is) consequence to the current application, we cannot do another pardon application.
“(Because) then we will be accused of a multiplicity of proceedings. That will endanger our application,” he said when met after a forum held at a convention centre in Kuala Lumpur this evening.
The defence counsel was asked whether he would consider filing another request for a royal pardon following the latest decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday.
Seeking leave
Istana Negara in a statement yesterday said anyone who wishes to seek clemency for a prisoner must submit their application to the Pardons Board.
Earlier, the Attorney-General’s Chambers had issued a statement saying that Najib must file a fresh application to the Pardons Board, chaired by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
For the record, Najib is seeking a leave order from the court to begin a judicial review on the purported addendum order, which was allegedly issued by the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah ordering Najib to serve his remaining jail sentence as house arrest.
The case is at the Court of Appeal stage and is slated for a decision this Monday.
Adding further, Shafee said they will complete the appeal process first before he “takes on another view”.
“If the appeal (at the Court of Appeal) is denied, then we will appeal to the Federal Court,” Shafee said. - Mkini
