IGP Razarudin Husain said the public should uphold the principles of the Rukun Negara, particularly regarding the rule of law and good behaviour and morality.PETALING JAYA: The Inspector-General of Police, Razarudin Husain, has urged the public not to take part in any rallies in light of a statement by Istana Negara issued earlier today.
The IGP’s statement came as politicians continued with plans for a rally on Jan 6 in support of imprisoned former prime minister Najib Razak, who has a court appearance that day over a legal challenge to be allowed to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest.
Razarudin said the palace statement clearly directed all prisoners wishing to seek a pardon to submit their applications to the pardons board, and not through any rallies or channels that do not comply with the law.
“To uphold the command of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and to safeguard public safety and order, the police urges the public not to participate in rallies organised by any parties,” said Razarudin.
“All citizens should uphold the principles of the Rukun Negara, particularly regarding the rule of law and good behaviour and morality, which are the pillars of the country’s prosperity and harmony.”
The Istana Negara statement today reiterated that under the constitution the king has the prerogative to grant pardons, on the advice of the pardons board, for offences committed within the federal territories.
Any prisoner seeking a pardon or reduction in sentence should submit an application for consideration by the pardons board, chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, at its next meeting, the statement said.
Thousands of Najib’s supporters are expected at the rally which PAS, Umno, MCA, MIC and Bersatu are set to attend.
Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence, halved by the pardons board from the initial 12 years, following his conviction in the SRC International case. - FMT
