Selangor Villagers Plead For Mb S Intervention To Postpone Eviction Order
A group of settlers from Koskan Tambahan in Serendah, Selangor, has pleaded for the state government's intervention to postpone their looming eviction order.
According to Maszahar Hashim, the secretary of the acting committee, 12 families who had called the village their home for more than 40 years, had been ordered to vacate the area by May 2, following a court order to that effect on March 18.
"The reason we are here today is to plead for an intervention by Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari to put off the eviction order until an amicable solution is reached between us and the developer.
"Please do not evict us, we have stayed there for more than 40 years," Maszahar said when met outside the Selangor legislative assembly building in Shah Alam today.
The group was there to hand a memorandum to the menteri besar's office, and it was accepted by the corporate division's assistant secretary Norbaini Zainuddin.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin ShariAmong the issues the group hopes to settle with the developer pending the eviction include land infringement in the village area, as well as the rewarding of land to the affected villagers.
Baharuddin Nood, a resident who had lived in the area for 43 years, said the state government should provide the villagers with temporary housing arrangements.
"Where can we go if we are evicted? We have lived there for almost 50 years. The authorities will evict us if we don't vacate the place.
"I really hope the state government will help us," he said when met today.
Amicable solution
Meanwhile, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan, who was also present, said the villagers would like to speak to the state administration, as well as the developer, for an amicable solution.
"The matter needs political intervention since the Selangor state government, since the time of (the now defunct) Pakatan Rakyat, has the policy that no one will be forcefully evicted before the people's housing woes are dealt with," he told reporters.
On Feb 17, the Shah Alam High Court ordered a private developer to take ownership of the land and instructed the eviction of the villagers. A writ of possession was released to the developer on March 30.
The villagers have filed an appeal against the notice, but a court date is yet to be fixed on the matter. - Mkini
