Immigration Officers Nabbed For Alleged Corruption In Dhaka
The MACC has arrested two enforcement officers who were attached to Malaysian High Commission in Bangladesh, according to Bernama today.
In a separate statement, Wisma Putra said the two were Immigration Department officers who were temporarily placed at the Immigration Attaché’s Office in its consulate in Dhaka.
Bernama quoted a source saying that the arrest was made on Monday after they were recalled to Malaysia and turned up at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to give their statement.
The arrest was made on suspicion that they have accepted bribes in connection with the issuance of foreign visas and the entry of Bangladeshi tourists and workers into Malaysia.
“MACC detected a number of suspicious money deposits into bank accounts of the two suspects, and they were ordered to return to Malaysia to assist in investigations.
“They have been remanded for three days from April 18 until today based on an order issued by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin in Putrajaya on Tuesday (April 18),” the source was quoted as saying.
The source also said the MACC has frozen more than 20 bank accounts linked to individuals and companies in relation to the case
The frozen accounts and eight parcels of land that were seized so far were worth about RM3.1 million, the report said quoting its source.
MACC chief commissioner Azam BakiThe Bernama report also quoted MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirming the arrest.
He reportedly said the investigation is being conducted under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
“I do not rule out the possibility of several more arrests after this. MACC is also looking for an individual named Siti Liyana Sakijan to help in investigations of the case,” he was quoted as saying.
