PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak welfare department is monitoring a childcare centre in Kuching linked to the controversial Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH).
The Borneo Post reported that state women, early childhood and community wellbeing development minister Fatimah Abdullah said the childcare centre was granted a five-year operating licence in 2014.
However, the childcare centre’s operator did not renew the licence despite continuing operations after the licence expired in 2019.
She said the Sarawak welfare department found 18 children residing at the centre when it last inspected the premises on July 10.
I remember the supervisor of the centre came to the welfare department to obtain a form to renew its licence, but the form was never returned to us, Fatimah said at a press conference.
She said one of the conditions stipulated for licence renewal was that the operator must have a permanent address, but the centre had relocated several times over the past few years.
Fatimah said the operator had been advised to renew the childcare centre’s licence, adding that her ministry would not hesitate to act against the centre if it failed to comply with rules and regulations.
She also said the Sarawak health department had been directed to inspect the centre following the recent allegations against GISBH welfare homes in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
Last Wednesday, police raided 20 welfare homes – which they had linked to GISBH – in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
According to police, 402 children were rescued and investigations showed that at least 13 of them were allegedly sodomised or taught to sexually assault others.
The authorities also arrested 171 people, including an ustaz and a hostel warden. - FMT
