Santhara Quitting Party Post To Focus On Segamat Says Deputy
Chong Fat Full and members of the Bersatu associate members’ wing at a press conference today.PETALING JAYA: Segamat MP Edmund Santhara is stepping down as Bersatu’s associate wing chairman as he wants to focus on his constituency ahead of the general election, his deputy has revealed.
Chong Fat Full said this was relayed to him by Santhara when the latter told him about his decision to quit the post.
“He is an MP there and in view of the impending elections, he wants to spend more time there. He is a great leader and has contributed a lot to the area. His reasons for wanting to focus on Segamat is an important matter,” he said at a press conference.
Santhara, formerly of PKR was made the head of Bersatu’s associates wing in September 2021, a year after becoming the first non-Bumiputera MP to join the party.

Chong also rejected claims that Santhara, who is deputy tourism, arts and culture minister, would leave Bersatu. The claims were untrue. Santhara also did not express any intention of joining Parti Bangsa Malaysia, headed by former Bersatu leader Zuraida Kamaruddin.
Chong said Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has yet to accept Santhara’s resignation letter.
“There is a meeting between the president and Santhara and it is still ongoing. We still cannot confirm whether there is any decision by the central leadership or not.
“But what we can tell you is that the wing’s leadership remains intact, be it the state or grassroots level.”
Last week, a political source told FMT that Santhara had quit Bersatu and had submitted a letter to Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin two weeks ago. - FMT
