A source told FMT that Santhara submitted a letter to Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin last week on his departure from the party.
The source said Santhara did not see any future for non-Bumiputera MPs in the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.
“The president knows about it too. Bersatu is trying to persuade him to change his mind, but he has said he will be going ahead with it.”

Santhara was the first non-Bumiputera MP to join Bersatu in August 2020.
The former PKR man, who is also the deputy tourism, arts and culture minister, was made the head of Bersatu’s associate wing in September 2021.
In January this year, Santhara said he was staying on with Bersatu despite receiving numerous offers to join other parties in the next general election (GE15).
“My stand is clear. I will remain in Bersatu with party president Muhyiddin Yassin,” he said in response to Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) asking him to join the party.
The source pointed out that Santhara’s exit meant that Bersatu will be losing its one and only non-Bumiputera MP.
Santhara was among the 10 other MPs who followed Azmin Ali out of PKR following the Sheraton Move in 2020.
He went on to serve as the deputy federal territories minister in Muhyiddin’s Cabinet. - FMT
