Sabah Umno Wants Snap Polls Amid Corruption Scandal Report

Sabah Umno is reportedly calling for the legislative assembly to be dissolved to pave the way for a state election as soon as possible.
According to a report by Berita Harian, Sabah Umno information chief Suhaimi Nasir said this is because of the corruption scandal faced by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders.
“Considering the current situation where the government led by GRS no longer appears to be championing the people but their own interests, it is appropriate for a state election to take place as soon as possible.
“This is so that the people can choose a new government to ensure their welfare is looked after,” he told the Malay-language daily when asked about preparations for an election.
Suhaimi (above) reportedly replied that Sabah Umno is ready to face an election if it is held early, and its preparations had not been affected by the fact that Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin is already facing corruption charges in court.
The mandate for the current crop of Sabah assemblypersons expires in October 2025.
The ruling coalition currently comprises GRS, Pakatan Harapan, Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat, and Perikatan Nasional. Warisan and Sabah Umno are in the state opposition.
However, a series of videos released by a whistleblower have implicated several GRS assemblypersons in which they were purportedly seen discussing bribes in exchange for their support of a mineral prospecting license.
Meanwhile, former Sabah Mineral Management CEO Jontih Enggihon accused Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor of abusing his power as the SMM chairperson.
Hajiji, however, claimed the videos were edited and dismissed the corruption allegations as attempts to destabilise the state government and tarnish its reputation. - Mkini
