Raub Mp Umno Youth Chief Should Apologise To Nga Face Censure
Raub MP Chow Yu Hui wants Umno Youth leader Dr Akmal Saleh to apologise to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for playing up negative sentiments over the latter's proposal to get Chinese new villages listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
He also suggested that the party's supreme council should take action against Akmal over his offer to school Nga on Malay history.
Chow said that the party's accusation - that the proposal would challenge the current status of bumiputeras - was baseless and irresponsible.
On Feb 1, Nga said that plans were being drawn up to recognise Chinese new villages for their cultural and historical value.
Chow added that Akmal’s action has harmed the relationship between Umno and DAP in the coalition government.
He also said that by being conservative, such action would not be able to attract voters supporting Perikatan Nasional and lead Umno to lose more non-Malay votes.
“It should be remembered that Chinese new villages gave 95 percent support to Umno, which led them to win the Pelangai by-election,” he added.
He questioned if the Unesco status given to Georgetown in Penang, and Malacca had changed the status of the bumiputera and affected inter-racial relations in the area.
Chow further stated that Nga had welcomed the proposal to apply for Unesco status Malay villages that meet the requirements as well.
However, Chow said, the proposal doesn’t automatically make Chinese new villages a Unesco site, as the agency will make a thorough review before approving the proposal.
“If the application is approved, it shows an important historical value and Umno does not need to oppose it strongly,” he said.
Chow also emphasised the importance of diversity which led the direction of the Madani government and called Umno to avoid racial politics. - Mkini
