Rafizi I Understand Nurul Retains Idealism Amid Political Chaos
Former PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said he understands the principles which served as the impetus for Nurul Izzah's decision to resign
“Nurul is a reformist and fighter. She is not withdrawing from politics. I read it (the resignation) as a decision to retain the idealism of the struggle amid the political chaos,” he tweeted this afternoon
In a statement later, the former Pandan lawmaker said Nurul had shared her views with him, especially on matters related to the reformasi commitment towards the people
He pointed out that the Permatang Pauh MP would continue to play an important role in parliament and national politics
“I wish to take a positive angle. I read it (the resignation) as a principled move which would allow her to raise issues concerning the public which are in line with reformasi in an objective manner,” he added
Rafizi also hoped that Nurul would reconsider her decision
“She knows I feel that she can defend the idealism of reformasiwith her senior position in PKR
“I also respect her decision. Nurul and I spent our youth building PKR since the first time we shared a stage in 1999 (in London). So I also understand her viewpoint
“Therefore, I will support all her decisions because I believe it stems from her intention to play a more effective role,” he added
Rafizi also hoped that party members would accept Nurul's decision as it proves that the idealism of reformasi still thrives in PKR
“A senior party position is just one way to contribute. Nurul has proven that the idealism of the struggle is more important than positions, titles or power
“Her decision, albeit shocking, sends a message which should be emulated,” he added
Apart from resigning as PKR vice-president, Nurul also relinquished her post as the party's Penang chief and announced that she would no longer serve the government in any capacity
Nurul, who is the daughter of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was heading the special Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) task force. -Mkini
