Psb To Remain Independent Opts Out Of Harapan
United Sarawak Party (PSB) said the party will not be joining Pakatan Harapan in order to remain as an independent party.
In a statement today, PSB president Wong Soon Koh said his party only supported Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim’s unsuccessful bid to be prime minister on the principle of respecting voters’ wishes during the 14th general election.
“Until the will of the people is changed through another election, PSB will continue to support the parties that were elected by the people in GE14.
“However, PSB will not enter into any alliance with any party as it intends to remain a fully independent multi-racial Sarawak party that will fight for the rights and welfare of all Sarawakians regardless of race or religion,” he said in a statement today.
The statement came following the latest political crisis that saw Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation. This culminated in Ismail Sabri Yaakob mustering the support of 114 MPs to become his successor, against Anwar’s 105 MPs.
In wake of this setback, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council said it would turn its attention towards uniting the opposition under the “big tent” concept.
Several Harapan politicians further urged the Harapan leadership to formally invite other parties such as PSB to join Harapan.
“Although Harapan and the opposition parties managed to nominate PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as the sole candidate for the ninth prime minister, the total of 105 support (of MPs) he had was still insufficient.
“Harapan needs to maintain and strengthen the support it has garnered from other opposition parties.
“In this regard, we recommend that Harapan immediately make an official invitation to all opposition parties consisting of Warisan, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), Pertubuhan Kinabalu Progresif Bersatu (Upko) and PSB to join Harapan,” said Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah and Amanah Senator Raj Munni Sabu in a joint statement earlier today. - Mkini
