Prkkimanis Triplets Cause A Stir At Polling Station
‘Didn’t you just vote?’ must be the most-oft asked question for triplets Zaki Muhamud, Zaidi Muhamud and Zakaria Muhamud at the polling station.
The 34-year-old triplets were seen at the SK Our Lady of Fatima polling station after casting their votes for the Kimanis parliamentary by-election on Saturday (Jan 18).
“When we go to the registration booth and when we are casting votes, we would often confuse the Election Commission (EC) staff workers. They must be thinking didn’t he just register or vote?” said Zakaria, one of the triplets.
The brothers, who are all single and still live with the rest of their family with four older siblings at Kampung Kelatuan, said they have never missed going together to vote ever since they were eligible to do so.
Zaki who sells burgers at Pantai Manis, while the other two brothers are security guards, expressed their collective hope that more development will be carried out in Kimanis when the new MP is elected.
“The locals would also benefit from more employment opportunities available here too,” they said.
The Kimanis by-election is a straight fight between Parti Warisan Sabah’s Datuk Karim Bujang and Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mohamad Alamin, with incumbent former Umno MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman staying out of the race after holding the seat since 1990.
There are 29,644 voters in Kimanis, comprising 42% Muslim bumiputras, 41% non-Muslim bumiputras and 6% Chinese and the parliamentary constituency is made up of two state seats, Membakut and Bongawan.
The Kimanis seat was declared vacant after the Federal Court on Dec 2 upheld the Election Court’s ruling, nullifying Anifah’s victory in the 14th General Election in May 2018.
Anifah, a former foreign minister, had won the seat with a 156-vote majority, securing 11,942 votes against Karim’s 11,786 votes while another candidate, Jaafar Ismail of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, had obtained 1,300 votes.
