In a move certain to inflame tensions between Umno and DAP, Tony Pua launched a blistering attack on Najib Abdul Razak’s supporters, labelling them “lovers of a crook” for condemning those celebrating the court’s verdict in the former premier’s case.
The DAP disciplinary chief asserted that both he and his party take pride in having played a pivotal role in the kleptocrat’s downfall and continued incarceration.
“There is absolutely no need to sympathise with such a crook,” he said in a social media post.
“Those chastising us to have 'humanity', who continue to love the crook - no one's stopping you. But don't stop the rest of us Malaysians from celebrating justice upheld.
“Looking forward to his next conviction later this week,” he added, referring to the upcoming court verdict on Dec 26 in Najib’s 1MDB-related case involving RM2.3 billion.
‘Najib already got massive discount’
Pua, who relentlessly pursued the 1MDB scandal during Najib’s tenure as prime minister, also noted that the “biggest crook in Malaysia” should instead be grateful for the “massive discount” he received when the Pardons Board halved his prison sentence and reduced his fine.
The former Damansara MP’s post came in response to Umno leaders condemning DAP national publicity secretary Yeo Bee Yin for remarking that Najib losing his bid for house arrest is another reason to celebrate the year’s end.
DAP leader Yeo Bee YinAmong them was secretary-general Asraf Wajdi Dusuki, who said Yeo was “extremely rude, excessive, and utterly lacking in humanity” and had insulted a former top leader, deeply loved by the entire Umno family.
He also suggested that perhaps it was time for Umno to review its position in the coalition government, where the alliance with DAP has been anything but rosy over the past three years.
PKR pouring cold water
Yeo’s remark also courted backlash from certain quarters in PKR, with its Lembah Jaya assemblyperson Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman, better known as Altimet, describing it as “uncouth and uncalled for”.
Selangor PKR election director Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan said such remarks only deepen divisions and reflect a lack of political maturity.
Ex-PM Najib Abdul RazakYesterday, Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Alice Loke, in rejecting Najib’s judicial review, ruled that the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal decree granting the former Umno president house arrest was invalid.
The judge reasoned that this was because the addendum was issued outside of the Pardons Board meeting, and the board did not deliberate on it.
“I’m of the view that a house arrest order is not capable of execution, no legal provision for such a mechanism in Malaysia,” the judge said. - Mkini
