Pm Below 70 Bersatu Rejects Hadi S Proposal
Bersatu has rejected the notion that a prime minister candidate must be 70 years old or younger, as proposed by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang at the Islamist party’s muktamar last week.
ADSBersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said there is no problem with a leader over 70 becoming prime minister, as long as they are capable.
“I think the prime minister (Anwar Ibrahim) himself looks like he has swollen eyes and swollen hands sometimes.
“So, I don’t think that (age 70) is the main factor if the individual is able to lead, that’s one.
“They still have the wisdom to lead and, most importantly, they are a unifying factor (for the people),” he said in a KiniTV podcast.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim jogs in Brazil, July 2025Tun Faisal said this unifying factor was present in his president, Muhyiddin Yassin, who was prime minister during the Covid-19 pandemic a few years ago.
“That’s why he was able to bring 12 non-government parties to sit together,” Tun Faisal added.
Previously, at the PAS annual muktamar in Alor Setar, Kedah, Hadi declined to be named as a potential prime minister if Perikatan Nasional wins the next election.
Hadi said he was not qualified for the position and proposed that the prime minister post be held by a leader under 70 years old.
The Marang MP, however, said the 70-year age reference was to himself and did not involve others.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang at the PAS muktamar, Sept 15Hadi’s stance followed Bersatu’s annual general assembly, which approved a motion to name Muhyiddin as Bersatu’s pick for Malaysia’s 11th prime minister.
When asked if Hadi’s statement referred to Muhyiddin, Tun Faisal said he rejected that notion.
“I don’t think so, because Anwar is now 75 years old. Over 70 is more or less correct. (Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) is 72 years old,” he added.
ADSMuhyiddin is now 78 years old, while Hadi is a year younger.
In line with Islam
Meanwhile, Tun Faisal said choosing Muhyiddin to be the next prime minister is in line with Islamic principles.
The motion he brought to endorse Muhyiddin at Bersatu’s recent annual general assembly was also based on the Pagoh MP’s proven leadership in facing major challenges.

Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin speaks at a Himpunan Rakyat PN Best gathering in Selangor, November 2022“I say this based on Islamic principles. Because we, as Muslims, when we have disagreements among ourselves, the Quran teaches us to return to the Quran, to Allah and His Messenger.
“That’s why, when we made the proposal, our proposal, I mentioned that the criteria for a leader (is) leadership in accordance with Islam,” he added. - Mkini
