PETALING JAYA: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has called for party polls to be held promptly to enable a smooth leadership transition.
Anwar, who is the prime minister, said the party’s leadership line-up should integrate both new and veteran leaders.
“However, young leaders must not be hasty when given the mandate, as it was the difficult experiences of the past leadership, who were ridiculed, pressured, and once considered enemies of the state, that allowed PKR to firmly establish itself today,” he said in a Facebook post today.
His remarks came after PKR’s special congress today approved amendments to its party constitution aimed at strengthening the party’s democratic processes.
Over two-thirds of delegates voted in favour of the amendments, which are expected to enhance internal party elections and governance.
Anwar said in his speech (at the special congress), he had addressed the concerns of some PKR leaders and MPs who, according to him, have been swayed by opposition rhetoric.
He also said some of them have expressed misplaced sympathy for individuals accused of embezzling public funds, without naming anyone specifically.
“The party leadership and PKR MPs should quickly respond and counter the opposition’s accusations with facts, such as the failure to defend the sovereignty of the nation in the Batu Puteh case,” he said, likely referring to the recent debate over the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report in the Dewan Rakyat.
Anwar also urged PKR leaders to promptly respond to the claim that the Malay and Muslim communities are under threat and clarify with the public that it had no basis whatsoever.
“Every PKR member and leader must continue to defend the people’s welfare and work diligently. We must not be satisfied with the positions we hold (in the party), but instead use it as a platform to realise the party’s aspirations and struggles,” he said. - FMT
