PERLIS Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has cautioned that he will speak out if DAP leaders persist with what he describes as provocations.
His remarks come after DAP MP RSN Rayer questioned whether controversial preacher Zakir Naik had violated a 2019 speaking ban by delivering a speech in Perlis.
“I see that my programme in Perlis has been questioned in the media. I feel that the DAP MP intends to ‘battle’ with me and Perlis again, just like the ‘political deceased’ Ramasamy and some of his colleagues did in the past.
“There are several issues involving DAP that I have remained silent on for now, out of respect for the current prime minister and national stability. I also have some friends in the DAP leadership whom I believe respect the sensitivities of the people of this country.
“However, if the DAP MP is so eager to ‘sell,’ then, God willing, I will ‘buy,’ just as I have done when the ‘political deceased’ from DAP previously tried to ‘sell’ their issues,” he said.
Rayer, defending his stance, asserted, “As an MP, it is my duty to speak up on matters of public interest without fear or favour.”
He demanded clarification from authorities on whether the preacher was still barred from speaking in Malaysia.
The controversy has reignited debate over Zakir’s presence in Malaysia with political and religious leaders clashing over the preacher’s influence.
Meanwhile, DAP member and Deputy Law Minister M Kulasegaran issued a media statement in which he defended Rayer and questioned Zakir’s speech. He recalled past controversies where Zakir’s statements caused dissatisfaction among non-Muslims, leading to the ban for national security reasons.
“I welcome Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution’s comment earlier today that he will check on the status of the ban. There must be immediate clarity on this matter of public importance.
“Malaysia is a united and harmonious country with different races and religions. We have continued to live in such fashion for over 67 years. We cannot, and must not, allow our national unity, harmony and security to be compromised-by anyone,” said the minister. — Focus Malaysia
