Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli believes that the state should not be ushering in the new year with celebration when Palestinians are suffering.
However, he qualified it by referring to entertainment programmes that are “melalaikan” (those which could lead one astray).
“How can we organise such entertainment programmes when our ‘saudara’ (kin) are being shot dead over there?
“So, I suggest that there should be no programmes in the form of singing and dancing which are ‘melalaikan’ on New Year’s Eve in Perlis,” he said.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that all 15 Perlis assemblypersons unanimously rejected the two-state solution, therefore refusing to recognise Israel as a legitimate nation.
“This crime has been taking place for a long time and is still viewed with apathy. There are no concrete solutions from the world powers to end the conflict.
“The cruelty continues with the mass killing of vulnerable groups without mercy - women, children and the elderly.
“To date, more than 15,000 Palestinians ‘syahid’ (martyred), 37,000 injured and 6,500 missing under collapsed buildings,” said Shukri when tabling a motion to condemn Israel's aggression.
Perlis, which is controlled by PAS and Perikatan Nasional, only has a single opposition member in the form of Indera Kayangan representative Gan Ay Ling (PKR).
On Saturday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim censured the United States for vetoing the United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire to the conflict.
Anwar said that on behalf of Malaysia, he also regretted the attitude of the US, which continued to defend the killing of children without restriction in Gaza.
