Penang Cops Apologise Over Gathering Outside Mosque In Penang

The Penang police have apologised for failing to prevent a gathering outside a mosque in Juru, Penang today.
The gathering took place outside the Taman Pelangi mosque. 
Video clips of the incident suggested that the congregation were mostly well spaced out.
At a press conference in Penang today, state police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the cops apologised for failing to uncover plans to gather beforehand.
He estimated that there were 200 people at the gathering.
"I also wish to use this opportunity to urge mosque caretakers to report violations of Covid-19 protocols if they see any through this hotline - 04-222-1722," Shuhaily said.
He added that the police were aware of the need to fulfil religious obligations but Covid-19 protocols still need to be maintained.
Although Penang is now under Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan, there are still restrictions for gatherings at places of worship.
In Penang, congregation sizes at state and district mosques may not exceed 150 people, while kariah mosques are limited to 100 people and suraus at 50 people. The restrictions vary from state to state as determined by state religious authorities.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin vowed that action will be taken against the event organisers.
“The Home Ministry guarantees that stern action will be taken without compromise against any individual found to have been involved in organising the event, and has instructed the Immigration Department not to hesitate in carrying out deportations under the Immigration Act 1958/63 if it involves foreigners.
“While the investigation is still pending, the Home Ministry urges members of the public to refrain from issuing any statement that impinges on religious and racial sentiments that could disturb the peace,” he said in a statement today.
Hamzah added that Shuhaily has also been instructed to give an immediate report on police officers tasked to monitor compliance with Covid-19 protocols. - Mkini
