Pas Youth Told To Stop Misleading Statements On Harith Iskander
PKR communications director Lee Chean Chung told PAS Youth to stop issuing misleading statements about comedian Harith Iskander.
He said PAS Youth misunderstood the real issue in its recent statement questioning swift action against a man who threatened Harith’s family compared to a perceived sluggish action against the comedian.
“PAS Youth needs to understand priorities and not link the country’s laws with personal political interests.
“Don’t distort the facts just because of politics,” said Lee (above), the Petaling Jaya MP, in a statement.
Yesterday (Feb 2), PAS Youth deputy chief Mohd Hafez Sabri said the authorities had taken “disproportionate” action against Harith and Facebook user Cecelia Yap, who made an insensitive remark on the ham and cheese sandwich uproar.
He said authorities swiftly took action against individuals who threatened Harith and his family while similar measures against the comedian and Yap have yet to be appropriately addressed.
PAS Youth deputy chief Mohd Hafez SabriHe attributed this to an imbalance in the enforcement of laws, which he said ought to protect interfaith harmony in the country.
Last Friday (Jan 31), the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 31-year-old man to five months in prison and fined him RM2,000 for criminally intimidating Harith’s ex-wife.
The charge sheet stated that the accused sent a WhatsApp message with a photo and threatening words, implying intentions to commit rape and murder against their 12-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, Lee said it was absurd of Hafez to equate a joke with a threat against someone’s family while also blaming the police for taking action against the latter.
He told the PAS leader to set a better example for youths in the country by paying attention to the people’s well-being instead of pursuing political power.
He further questioned the state of freedom of speech in the country.
Harith IskanderADS“Harith is a comedian who relies on jokes and pranks for his career. If jokes and satire can now be used as an excuse to threaten someone, then where is the freedom of speech in our country?” he said.
Harith’s family was threatened after the police investigated the comedian for a satirical post on the use of the word “ham” following the controversy over the halal status of sandwiches sold at a convenience store in Universiti Malaya.
Yap, who is also being investigated over a comment on Harith’s Facebook post, has since apologised.
More than a dozen police reports were lodged against Harith and Yap, who were accused of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad through their remarks on social media. - Mkini
