Pas Will Continue With Jan 6 Rally Takiyuddin
PAS will press ahead with the rally on Jan 6 despite Umno, the rally organiser, backing out, said the Islamist party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.
“The solidarity rally is about defending Agong’s powers and prerogative from being manipulated, apart from supporting former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s efforts to get justice under the same principles.
“As such, PAS has no plans to revise our earlier call to our members in regard to the peaceful rally scheduled on the same day, time and place mentioned,” Takiyuddin (above) said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that his party has called off its rally slated for Jan 6 for Najib, who would be attending a court hearing regarding the purported royal addendum allowing him to serve his remaining prison sentence at home.
This comes after a decree from Istana Negara on the king’s pardon prerogative and a warning from the inspector-general of police not to attend the rally.
“Umno will never act contrary to the Constitution and remains committed to respecting all rules and laws as decreed by His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“In line with the principle of upholding His Majesty’s decree and following the directive from the inspector-general of police, Umno has decided not to proceed with the assembly scheduled for Jan 6.
“Umno places its full confidence in the benevolence and wisdom of His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in delivering full justice to Najib,” Asyraf said.
Najib Abdul RazakEarlier today, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi urged PAS and other NGOs to cancel their rally plans.
‘Rally not breaching Agong’s decree’
Takiyuddin further stressed that PAS respects related laws pertaining to the powers vested to the Pardons Board, chaired by the Agong.
However, the former law minister pointed out that the scheduled rally was not in breach of the Agong’s decree nor any provisions of the Federal Constitution or the Pardons Board’s processes.
“This peaceful rally goes beyond racial or political beliefs to ensure our former premier gets justice under the same prerogative powers which gave him some relief, in the form of the alleged royal addendum.
“Unfortunately, doubts came about over the alleged royal addendum, which was seen as being hidden by certain quarters to deny the relief granted to Najib.
“The action of this quarters had forced Najib to seek court redress to determine the existence of the alleged royal addendum,” the Kota Bharu MP added. - Mkini
