Pas To Macc Release Bersatu S Frozen Accounts If No Wrongdoing Found
- NSTP file picKOTA BARU: Pas is hoping that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will release Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) accounts if no wrongdoing was found.
Party's vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said this will help Bersatu in the upcoming state elections.
"It is acceptable if the accounts were temporarily frozen to make way for the MACC probe.
"However, what is worrying is there could be another reason (behind the freeze)... This is because Bersatu needed the accounts for the party and its activities, especially with the state polls coming."
The Deputy Menteri Besar said Pas will leave it to the MACC to investigate and wait for the outcome.
"To us (Pas), we have no problem if certain quarters wanted MACC to freeze our accounts too because if you look at our accounts, there's not much money there," he added.
MACC recently confirmed the suspension of Bersatu's bank accounts to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 that began last December.
It was understood that the accounts in question were frozen as part of the MACC's probe into alleged irregularities in the use of RM600 billion worth of public funds meant for the Covid-19 pandemic when Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was prime minister.
Several news reports also suggested that the action was linked to allegations that Bersatu received donations from about 10 contractors said to have procured various public projects when the party was in government.
It is believed the donations amounted to more than RM300 million. - NST
