Frozen Accounts Could Affect Bersatu At State Polls Says Faizal
Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said following the freeze on its accounts, members would go on foot to campaign in the upcoming elections in six states if they had to.PETALING JAYA: Bersatu’s campaign for the upcoming elections in six states could be hampered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) freezing of its accounts, said the party’s deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
According to Sinar Harian, Faizal said Bersatu is a small party and did not have much funds.
“If we have no money at all, it won’t be easy to hold an election campaign. It would hamper our campaign efforts.
“However, if we have to set off on foot to meet voters one by one, we will go ahead and do that,” he said.
Yesterday, MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (Amla).
This is understood to be linked to an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of billions of ringgit meant for Covid-19 stimulus packages.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin previously denied claims his government had misappropriated RM92.5 billion when he was prime minister, while Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin had accused Putrajaya of using the anti-graft agency as a political tool.
Meanwhile, Faizal said he did not know why Bersatu’s accounts were frozen but reiterated that the party had fully cooperated with the MACC.
“We hope they can conduct their investigations quickly because we will have issues with the party’s operations, including paying workers’ salaries, with our accounts frozen.” - FMT
