Nothing To Lose From Apologising Tajuddin Tells Ex Umno Leaders
Ex-Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman expressed confidence that many former leaders who were sacked or suspended still care deeply for the party.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman has urged ex-Umno leaders who were expelled or suspended to follow his example by apologising if they still care about the party.
Tajuddin, whose suspension was lifted on Nov 25, said there was no harm in apologising and persistently appealing as he had done until his reinstatement was accepted by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“You lose nothing by doing so, and no one will ridicule you by saying that you were once bold but are now seeking forgiveness,” he told FMT in an exclusive interview.
“Apologising is an act of bravery, and so is forgiving. Those who continue to hold grudges are cowards and weak,” he added.
Several Umno leaders were sacked from the party in the aftermath of the 15th general election (GE15), including former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin. Former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and ex-information chief Shahril Hamdan were suspended for six years.
Tajuddin was likewise given a six-year suspension from Umno in September 2022, after openly criticising Zahid’s leadership. He was also excluded as a Barisan Nasional candidate for the Pasir Salak parliamentary seat in GE15.
Yesterday, FMT reported Tajuddin as saying that PAS had tried to convince him to defend his seat under the party’s banner in the GE15. However, he said he declined out of loyalty to Umno.
Tajuddin, who once served on the Umno Supreme Council, said he was reluctant to take on the role of a mediator in efforts to bring back expelled party leaders.
“I’m still considering whether I’m the right person to persuade them. I don’t want to be accused of overstepping my role.
“But we’ll see in the near future. If there’s an opportunity, we can discuss it,” he said, expressing confidence that many former Umno leaders who were sacked or suspended still cared for the party.
“My advice to those who were suspended or expelled is: let’s put the past behind us for the sake of the party’s future.” - FMT
