No Sin In Not Supporting Islamic Parties Says Penang Mufti
Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor’s (left) statement comes in the wake of a controversy over alleged comments by Kelantan’s new menteri besar, Nassuruddin Daud.PETALING JAYA: It is not sinful nor blasphemous for Muslims to not support Islamic parties, says Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor.
Wan Salim said such parties are created by humans and are therefore not sacred nor sacral in nature, reported Harian Metro.
“Only fanaticism would drive someone to equate human creations with divine creations,” he said. “Any individual or group can claim to fight for Islam, but such claims must be clearly substantiated in the realities of life,” he said in a statement.
He reminded the public that fighting for Islam involves more than the mere use of slogans, but through upholding social justice, improving welfare, eradicating poverty, combating corruption and vices, and so on.
Previously, Kelantan menteri besar Nassuruddin Daud drew brickbats after he allegedly labelled the two opposition assemblymen in the state as anti-Islam in his Friday sermon.
Yesterday, the two assemblymen, Barisan Nasional’s Syahbuddin Hashim, who is the Galas assemblyman, and Kota Lama assemblyman Dr Hafidzah Mustakim from Pakatan Harapan-Amanah, said Nassuruddin had gone too far.
They demanded Nassuruddin apologise within seven days or face legal action.
Kelantan Amanah’s legal bureau spokesman Hisham Fauzi also rebuked Nassuruddin, saying PAS does not have exclusive rights to the Islamic struggle.
Hisham said PAS must remember it was once a minority member of the Kelantan assembly in 1978 and should not lord over opposition representatives just because they were not in support of PAS.
Nassuruddin has since denied claims that he labelled the two opposition assemblymen in the state as anti-Islam, saying that his words were twisted. - FMT
