No Promotion For Department Heads Who Turn Blind Eye To Misconduct Says Pm

(Bernama pic)PUTRAJAYA: There will be no promotion for department heads if misconduct by civil servants under them exists and goes unreported, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.
He said it was impossible for department heads or unit chiefs to be unaware of misconduct in their administrations.
“In cases where the misconduct is obvious, how is it that the unit chief does not know about it? Why doesn’t  the department head report it? This has been going on for years. It’s impossible not to know.
“At our upcoming meeting on salary adjustments, I will recommend that (Chief Secretary to the Government Zuki Ali) freeze the promotion of any department head ot unit chief if corruption taking place under their watch is not reported,” he said at the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly today.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said a decision on the parameters for promotions will be made next week, and will be announced by Zuki and Public Service Department director-general (KPPA) Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
“I hope you understand. Otherwise, do not take up the post of  department head because the responsibility is great. Tell the KPPA that (you) only want to work as an officer, and not as a unit or department head,” he said.
He said the responsibility of preventing misconduct lay not only with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, but also with all department heads and unit chiefs.
“This is not just about preserving the image and integrity of civil servants, but that of our country. I want Malaysia to be known as a country clean of corruption,” he added.
Anwar also urged civil servants, the majority of whom are Muslims, to instill the spirit of haj in their work practices towards achieving excellence in their duties and to eradicate all forms of dishonesty.
