(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Hardcore poverty will be eradicated in Terengganu within the next two months, provided the federal and state governments work closely in that endeavour, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
He said there were 1,663 families in the state categorised as hardcore poor as of May 2, according to Bernama.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said federal agencies have been ordered to work closely with the PAS-led Terengganu government to ensure that hardcore poverty can be eradicated in this two-month period.
“Don’t tell me that, despite the wealth of all the agencies (and) ministries, they are unable to rescue more than 1,000 families from hardcore poverty?
“These families don’t have enough food to eat, they don’t have new clothes for their children, and struggle to buy uniforms for them to go to school.
“If the federal government and the state government fully cooperate, hardcore poverty can be eradicated here,” he was quoted as saying at a Madani Aidilfitri event in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, today.
Anwar was joined by Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar at the event.
Anwar also urged the people of Terengganu to dismiss claims that the federal government did not pay any attention to the state just because it was governed by PAS.
He said Putrajaya prioritised projects that would benefit the people, and even ordered for them to be expedited.
He also said the government would ensure that flood mitigation projects in the state be carried out according to schedule. - FMT
