Anwar Govt Aims To Eradicate Kedah Hardcore Poverty In Two Months
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wants hardcore poverty in Kedah eradicated within two months, highlighting the fact that there are 2,500 households categorised as such in the state.
“I have instructed the federal and state governments to assist them and eradicate hardcore poverty in Kedah within two months,” Free Malaysia Today reported Anwar as saying at the Kedah Madani Aidilfitir celebrations in Jitra last night.
The prime minister also hopes that differences in opinion between the Kedah and federal governments will not hinder efforts to strengthen cooperation for the benefit and welfare of the people.
He also thanked Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and the state government for their full cooperation in organising the Aidilfitri celebration.
Anwar highlighted Kedah’s significant role in rice production and ensuring food security but noted that padi farmers in the state continue to face poverty.
“Therefore, I emphasised the importance of federal ministries and agencies working closely with the state government to implement efforts for Kedah’s development, especially in eradicating poverty.
“This includes efforts to increase farmers’ income through a surge in rice production, which requires an allocation of RM5 billion from the federal government,” he said, according to Bernama.
Anwar said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry found that the previous RM3 billion allocation was insufficient for infrastructure to multiply rice production in Kedah.
“This (increased allocation) would help meet the country’s demand for rice,” he said.
Sanusi in turn expressed appreciation to the prime minister for paying attention to development projects in the state, especially in the rural areas. - Mkini
