No Malaysians Facing Deportation From Us Have Contacted Embassy Says Envoy

Malaysian ambassador to the US Nazri Aziz said the deportation of illegals is expected because Donald Trump had raised the issue during his presidential campaign.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s ambassador to the US, Nazri Aziz, said no Malaysians facing deportation have approached the embassy for assistance so far, possibly because they are afraid.
“Perhaps (the reason is) they are illegal and they fear to reveal themselves,” Nazri told FMT.
However, he advised those affected to go to the embassy for assistance.
“There’s a Malaysian Association of America (in the US) and they have informed me they offer legal advice to illegal Malaysians in the US,” he said.
Nazri was asked to comment on a news report that some 435 Malaysians are facing deportation from the US after receiving their final deportation orders from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Citing data from ICE’s enforcement and removal operations dashboard, Harian Metro reported that the Malaysians, among 1.44 million people served with deportation orders, are currently in ICE’s non-detention docket.
They were served with deportation orders after Donald Trump was installed as US president for a second term.
According to ICE, foreigners served with the orders can still seek asylum in the US as refugees or under the UN’s Convention against Torture, although Washington encourages home countries to accept the return of their citizens.
Wisma Putra later said it was aware of reports on the deportation but that the Malaysian embassy in Washington had not received any formal notification from US authorities.
It also said there has been no official request for consular assistance from Malaysians served with the deportation orders.
Nazri said the deportations were expected as it was a topic Trump had often raised during his presidential campaign.
“We have been hearing about this during Trump’s presidential campaign and he is serious. We should be prepared,” he said. - FMT
