Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari at the state-level Chinese New Year celebration held at Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple -KUALA LANGAT: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has affirmed that there is no need for guidelines restricting Muslims from attending non-Islamic celebrations in the state.
He said he upheld the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who had earlier said that such guidelines were unnecessary.
"I humbly uphold His Royal Highness' decree this evening that there is no need for guidelines for Muslims attending non-Islamic celebrations, especially in Selangor," he said during the state-level Chinese New Year celebration tonight, graced by Sultan Sharafuddin.
Also present were Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin, and State Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee Chairman Ng Sze Han.
Amirudin said the event, held at Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple, exemplified the state's harmony, where people of diverse backgrounds live together in mutual respect.
"Although I often repeat this during festive seasons, the peace and diversity among the people of Selangor are the foundations of our prosperity in this beloved state.
"This is not merely a matter of tolerance. In Selangor, we have a strong sense of unity and understanding, regardless of religion or race," he said.
He said Selangor had long embraced diversity, with its people upholding dignity and confidence in their respective beliefs and practices.
On Wednesday, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said it was finalising guidelines on Muslims' participation in events at non-Islamic places of worship.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the guidelines aimed to ensure that Muslims attending such events did not engage in actions that could offend Muslim sensitivities.
However, Sin Chew Daily reported that the Cabinet had decided to overturn the move to issue guidelines for Muslims attending events at non-Muslim places of worship.
Citing sources, the report claimed that the Cabinet had rejected the implementation of the proposed guidelines.
Earlier, the Sultan of Selangor had expressed his stance against implementing any guidelines prohibiting Muslims from participating in non-Islamic celebrations, stating that such restrictions were unnecessary and could lead to division. - NST
