PETALING JAYA: The public services department (JPA) says no ethnic groups are discriminated against during the selection process for civil servants.
In a statement, JPA noted that while Chinese applicants accounted for only 2% of total applications submitted from 2019 to 2023, their success rate was 85%.
The success rate for the Indian applicants was 68%, followed by Orang Asli (54%), Sabah and Sarawak Bumiputeras (45%), and other ethnic groups (42%).
In comparison, Malay candidates, despite making up 77% of total applications, had a success rate of 41%.
“These statistics demonstrate that there is no discrimination or marginalisation of any group during the selection process,” it said.
“These appointments are made in line with the government’s principle of selecting the most suitable and qualified candidates for available positions based on their qualifications and performance in tests and interviews.”
JPA said as of Dec 31, there were 1,302,429 civil servants across various ministries and agencies, excluding the police and armed forces.
Of this, Malays made up 77.7%, Chinese 5.4%, Indians 3.7%, and the rest comprised Bumiputeras from Sabah and Sarawak, Orang Asli, and other ethnic groups.
JPA said the ethnic composition gap in the public service was due to the low number of non-Malay applicants.
It said the government would continue to improve the civil service recruitment system to make it more efficient, transparent, and accessible to all citizens.
JPA said the government also urged qualified Malaysians to join the public service to contribute to the nation’s development, thereby promoting more equal and inclusive opportunities for all. - FMT
