PAS central election committee chairman Wan Rohimi Wan Daud today released the list of eligible candidates for the Islamic party’s polls, following a committee meeting yesterday.
The list stated “single candidate (no contest)” for both the presidency and deputy presidency, but did not name the candidates.
For the vice-presidency, four candidates were deemed eligible to contest – Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Idris Ahmad, Amar Abdullah and Sanusi Nor.
Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu menteri besar, along with Idris and Amar, are currently the party’s vice-presidents.
Sanusi, who is PAS’s election director, had said in July that he was not ready to take up the position of vice-president despite support from the party’s top leadership.
He had said that he would have no issue remaining in the second tier of leadership if more suitable and capable candidates were available.
PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin previously voiced support for Sanusi’s nomination, citing his strong performance as Kedah menteri besar and his influence within the party.
Abdul Hadi Awang has held the PAS presidency since June 2002. While speculation has grown over whether he will defend his post due to health concerns, he has expressed a desire to “die while still in office”.
PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik previously claimed there had been calls for Hadi to step down, though this was denied by several state leaders.
In February, a PAS source told FMT the party was likely to see a contest for its top two posts this year – for the first time in a decade.
Hadi and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man have not been challenged for their posts since the 2015 party polls.
Eligible candidates for the party’s Ulama Council chief post are incumbent Ahmad Yahaya and Bukit Payung assemblyman Nor Hamzah.
For the PAS Youth chief post, Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden is eligible to defend the position, with Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar is also vying for the position. - FMT
