(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement says it will not back down from seeking justice for Beng Hock, despite a police investigation over a protest it organised.
The group said its campaign on a “missing prime minister” did not involve any political party, while none of its posters or flyers touched on issues involving race, religion and royalty, commonly known as the 3Rs.
It said it only launched the campaign following multiple unsuccessful attempts by Beng Hock’s family to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over the past 17 months.
“We will not back off or stop fighting for justice for Beng Hock due to police intimidation. As our vice-secretary and Beng Hock’s sister Lee Lan said, if meeting Anwar requires going to the police station for questioning, then we will go to the police station.
“If going to court to be charged is necessary to meet Anwar, then we are also prepared to go to court,” it said in a statement.
The group’s chairman, Ng Yap Hwa, and Lee Lan are being investigated for intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace after they launched the campaign in Kuala Kubu Baharu yesterday.
The investigation has drawn brickbats from civil society and former deputy law and institutional reform minister Ramkarpal Singh, who said the probe was “unwarranted and most regrettable”.
The group said Anwar of all people should know that it was the norm in democratic nations for citizens to seek a meeting with their prime minister to raise certain issues or concerns.
It questioned where Ng and Lee Lan had committed the purported crime of insulting others.
“Ng and Lee Lan were exercising their constitutional right to freedom of speech. Posting posters pales in comparison with the fiery Reformasi street protests led by Anwar in the past.
“Does the so-called ’reformer’ only allow struggles against injustice involving himself but prohibit the people from seeking justice in Beng Hock’s case?
“Arrest the perpetrators; never forget Beng Hock,” it said. - FMT
