No Abuse Of Customer Data Under Selangor Insurance Scheme Says Pm

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Selangor’s free insurance scheme, Insan, has not abused customers’ personal information as stipulated under the Financial Services Act and the Islamic Financial Services Act, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said according to Bank Negara Malaysia, consumers willingly provided their personal data through the Wavpay application.
He said individuals interested in the insurance scheme would have to check their eligibility on the Insan website, register on the Wavpay application, upload a selfie with their identification card for verification and then agree to the terms and conditions.
“By completing the above process, individuals give their consent for the use of their data for the purpose of obtaining insurance or takaful protection under Insan,” he said in a written Dewan Rakyat reply.
Anwar was responding to Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) who had asked when and what actions would be taken against those involved in the Insan “scandal”.
Hamzah, who is also the opposition leader, previously questioned Anwar’s silence over the “scandal”, after some people complained of being automatically registered for Insan without their consent.
Insan is a Selangor government initiative to provide free personal accident insurance protection to residents aged between 30 days and 80 years old.
Previously, communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said the personal data protection department was looking into complaints of misuse of personal data for the scheme.
Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari had earlier said the state government pre-registered Selangor residents for the scheme with data it obtained from the Election Commission’s electoral roll.
He said the insurance policy would only be underwritten after the person agreed and uploaded a selfie and a photo of their identity card. - FMT
