Green Aviation To Be Discussed Next Week Says Loke
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said his ministry planned to transform the transportation sector in the coming years, with the end goal of becoming a net-zero nation by 2050.KUALA LUMPUR: The transport ministry will hold a meeting with the National Aviation Consultative Council (NACC) next week, where “green aviation” will be its key agenda.
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the ministry is committed to helping airlines reduce their carbon footprint by introducing efficient mechanisms that would enable planes to land faster and burn less fuel.
Drawing attention to methanol as a sustainable fuel, he also said he would follow up with Petronas on how Malaysia could become a green fuel bunkering hub in the maritime industry.
“We must lead by positioning Malaysia as a production and trading hub of sustainable fuel for both maritime shipping and aviation logistics,” Loke said during the official launch of the Green Logistics Partnership Conference 2023 (GLPC).
“Malaysia is lagging behind and must catch up by having both the government and private sectors working together to overcome existing barriers.”
GLPC serves as a platform for industry leaders and stakeholders to discuss and share low-carbon initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability in the transport and logistics sector.
Loke said a 2019 study found that 85.2% of transportation emissions in Malaysia came from vehicles on the road. Cars account for about 59% of the overall emissions while freight is responsible for 27%.
He said it was crucial to find realistic ways to lower these numbers and reduce carbon emissions while sustaining growth.
He added that the transport ministry had adopted several “green logistics” strategies that were aligned with the national transport policy.
The strategies include prioritising the public transport network as the fundamental structure in charting out sustainable urban areas as well as developing effective communication, education and public awareness to create behavioural change.
Loke also emphasised the ministry’s plan to transform the transportation sector in the coming years, with the end goal of becoming a net-zero nation by 2050.
“This means a lot of investment and capital expenditure in purchasing new electric vehicles, and that will take some time because of limitations in terms of our financial capacity. However, we have to start somewhere, and the transport ministry is fully supportive of this initiative,” he said. - FMT
