Musa Hitam From Nationalism To Materialism Umno Might Not Form Govt
Musa Hitam is concerned that Umno will not win the sufficient number of seats required to form the federal government and be reduced to a minority after the next general election.
He also urged Umno members to steer the party in the right direction since it has drifted from the initial “spirit of nationalism to the lust for materialism, wealth, and individual interests.”
“The interests of the people are no longer prioritised. Umno is suffering from a leadership crisis… like never before,” he added.
Musa, who served as deputy prime minister from 1981 and 1986 during Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s first tenure as premier, said Umno members can no longer remain silent to safeguard their own positions.
“If we don’t do something or are not wise in choosing (leaders)... Use only emotions, sentiments or money to amass power like in the past, then Umno will be finished after it is rejected by the people,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Musa was speaking at a forum organised by the association of former Umno elected representatives (Mubarak) in Johor last night.
The former Umno number two noted that all political parties have adopted a “wait and see” approach for this national polls because none of them are confident about the outcome.
Based on his observation, he said: “All parties are afraid and unsure what will transpire. This is due to the political situation being in a mess. The people are also confused.”
“All parties are unsure about the result and how the people will vote. All parties are taking a ‘wait and see’ stand. They will make their respective moves after the election,” he added.
Musa also pointed out that the “big tent” formula promoted by certain leaders has not been accepted by almost all the political coalitions.
Describing it as a controversial concept, he said these parties are not keen on sharing power and seats.
“The outcome of the 15th general election will be interesting. However, I predict greater negative implications when not a single party is capable of being dominant,” he added. - Mkini
