Muhyiddin Used Sds For Power Now It S Back To Haunt Him

What goes around comes around. And this time, statutory declarations (SD) - which once gave power to Muhyiddin Yassin - have hit the Bersatu president like a boomerang.
In 2020, after toppling the Pakatan Harapan government by leading Bersatu out of the coalition, SDs installed Muhyiddin as prime minister.
Then, in the aftermath of the 2022 general election, Muhyiddin attempted to use SDs from a group of BN lawmakers to return to power.
He was quite bitter when his SDs were not accepted and Anwar Ibrahim was made premier instead, and still talked about it two years after the election.
These instances showed that Muhyiddin had no problems using SDs as a means of attaining power.
But when it threatens to remove him from power, suddenly it is not okay.
‘SD move violates party constitution’
Around 120 Bersatu division leaders have reportedly signed declarations calling for Muhyiddin to resign as president and hand over the reins to his deputy, Hamzah Zainudin.
Hamzah ZainudinThey’re worried that Muhyiddin can’t lead the party and Perikatan Nasional to victory in the next general election.
In his opening speech at the Bersatu AGM on Saturday, the party president claimed the move violates the party’s rules and constitution.
He lamented that if a president can be removed via SDs, then all leaders would also be vulnerable to such action.
Perhaps he should have considered this logic when using SDs to prove he had a majority in Parliament instead of doing it through a vote of confidence.
Buyer’s remorse?
But Muhyiddin isn’t the only one reaping what he sowed.
Two years ago, he had announced plans to retire as Bersatu president, only to U-turn after the party pressured him to stay on.
I wonder how many of the division leaders and conspirators trying to remove him now regret that they did not let Muhyiddin ride off into the sunset like he originally planned instead of empowering him further.
In either case, it looks like the party that upheaved Malaysian politics and caused years of political instability is having a taste of its own medicine. - Mkini
