Find Cure For Bersatu S Chronic Illness Muhyiddin S Ex Aide Says
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s former aide has warned that a “chronic illness” within the party, if left unchecked, could spread and endanger its future.
“This illness may only affect one or two people now. But if no cure is found, it will spread further,” Marzuki Mohamad said on Facebook.
He noted that although Bersatu has more than 90 MPs and assemblypersons, internal disputes are threatening to destabilise the party.
Marzuki’s (above) remarks came amid efforts to sideline Muhyiddin, who also serves as Perikatan Nasional chairperson.
At Bersatu’s recent annual general meeting, the former premier acknowledged such attempts, revealing that certain individuals were collecting signatures to oust him as president.
This follows the circulation of a poison pen letter targeting Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.
Divisions are also evident within PN, with PAS Youth proposing the Islamist party’s deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as a prime minister candidate despite Bersatu delegates having nominated Muhyiddin for the post should PN win the next general election.
Confusion prior to GE14
Marzuki recalled what transpired in Bersatu when the party had to nominate Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the seventh prime minister ahead of the 14th general election.
According to him, during a Bersatu supreme council meeting, some believed Muhyiddin, who co-founded the party with Mahathir, was equally qualified to be prime minister.
However, to maintain unity, Muhyiddin himself proposed Mahathir’s nomination.

Muhyiddin Yassin and Dr Mahathir Mohamad“They didn’t openly support Muhyiddin because they were afraid Mahathir would be offended. They also didn’t openly support Mahathir because they were afraid Muhyiddin would be offended.
“In the end, Muhyiddin himself spoke up in support of Mahathir, and the council decided to nominate Mahathir as PM7,” he said.
DAP had Anwar’s back
Marzuki added that at the time, Mahathir had also attended PKR’s national congress, where delegates displayed placards backing Anwar Ibrahim as the seventh prime minister candidate - even though the Pakatan Harapan leader was still in prison.

Lim Kit Siang“I met (DAP veteran) Lim Kit Siang, and he told me that DAP would continue to nominate Anwar as PM, no one else. That was DAP’s position.
“Later, the nomination issue was brought to the Harapan presidential council. Once again, Muhyiddin was among the strongest in defending the Bersatu supreme council decision to nominate Mahathir.
“In the end, after several rounds of negotiations, Mahathir was nominated as PM7 and (PKR leader Dr) Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail) as DPM.
“At that time, I didn’t hear a single Bersatu member say that their supreme council’s decision to nominate Mahathir as PM7 was wrong,” he said. - Mkini
