Most Minimal Force Used Against Aggressive Detainee Say Cops
Police say Joseph Prakash Sukumaran had acted aggressively at the Serdang district police headquarters.PETALING JAYA: Police used the “most minimum force” when arresting former workshop manager Joseph Prakash Sukumaran at the Serdang district police headquarters last week, said Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed.
In a statement today, Arjunaidi said the 43-year-old – who had threatened to kill his wife while at the police headquarters – tested positive for methamphetamine and had a criminal record, with eight prior cases.
Joseph alleged yesterday that he was beaten up by seven police officers at the Serdang district police headquarters last Wednesday, claiming the officers punched, choked him and threw a chair at him. He said he still has difficulty breathing after a police officer pressed his knee on his chest.
Joseph’s wife also backed him up, lodging a report immediately over the alleged assault on her husband.
After a medical check-up at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang, Joseph was found to have sustained soft tissue injury to his neck, chest, limbs and face.
Stating that the article FMT carried yesterday regarding Joseph’s allegations was “not true”, Arjunaidi said Joseph was at the Serdang district police headquarters to record a statement after his wife lodged a police report about a domestic abuse case.
“When he came across his wife, he threatened to kill her and acted aggressively,” said Arjunaidi.
“The police advised the suspect not to make noise at the station, but he did not listen. He called the policemen ‘stupid’ and again acted aggressively.
“There was a scuffle during the arrest and police were forced to use the most minimum force (to arrest him).”
He said Joseph has since been charged with four separate offences under three Acts for disorderly conduct in a police station; obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duty; and for using indecent, threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaving in such a manner.
Arjunaidi said a police enquiry paper has been opened to investigate a police report Joseph lodged at the Bandar Kinrara police station last Friday alleging his abuse at the Serdang district police headquarters.
Arjunaidi added that the Selangor criminal investigation department (CID) would be handling the inquiry. - FMT
