Mosque Did Not Put Up Viral Anti Rohingya Banner Pkr Lawmaker
A mosque in Kg Plentong Baru, Johor Bahru, has been advised to take down an anti-Rohingya banner found outside its premise, according to PKR's Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim
An image of the banner went viral yesterday and Hassan told Malaysiakini today that he issued the instruction after making inquiries with the local village chief
"According to the village chief, the banner was not put up by the Kg Plentong Baru mosque committee
"I have advised the village chief to ask the mosque committee to take down the banner," he said
Hassan Abdul KarimAccording to the viral image, the banner seen below a signboard outside the mosque states "We are not welcoming Rohingya to Kg Plentong Baru" and "Kami tak perlukan anda di sini (We don't need you here)"
When contacted, Kg Plentong Baru village chief Mohamad Nor Ali said while he was aware of the matter, further comments could only be issued by his superior who is also overseeing other villages within the Plentong locality
The viral image was shared in the wake of Putrajaya's decision that only Malaysians will be allowed to attend congregational and Friday prayers at mosques once Covid-19 prevention rules are relaxed beginning June 10
In the early phases of the movement control order (MCO), Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said that police are investigating the sudden spike in negative sentiments directed towards the Rohingya community in Malaysia. Even with reports of a crackdown against undocumented migrants and refugees, hundreds of Rohingyas continue to risk their lives to reach our shores, with a latest failed attempt rescued off the borders of Langkawi yesterday. - Mkini
