Ministry Sets World Record For Promoting Occupational Safety And Health

Guinness World Records recognition for 'Most Pledges Received for an Occupational Safety Campaign in One Year'.
Deputy human resources minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad (centre) said the recognition symbolises the nation’s commitment to occupational safety and health while branding Malaysia as a global leader in the agenda.SEPANG: Malaysia has made history after the human resources ministry, through the department of occupational safety and health (DOSH) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), received Guinness World Records recognition for the “Most Pledges Received for an Occupational Safety Campaign in One Year”
Deputy human resources minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the recognition symbolises Malaysia’s strong commitment to occupational safety and health and positions the nation as a global leader in advancing workplace safety standards.
“I hope these pledges are not just symbolic, but truly reflect a strong commitment from all parties; employers and employees alike,” he said when officiating the 2024 National OSH Awards ceremony tonight.A total of 29 winners, comprising 28 organisations and one individual, were honoured for their contributions and innovations in enhancing safety and health practices at workplaces.
Rahman also highlighted the 150-year evolution of Malaysia’s OSH framework, tracing its roots back to the mining sector, which laid the foundation for the country’s industrial development.
He said the enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and the ratification of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 in June last year showed Malaysia’s commitment to aligning with global standards.
“The 150-year journey of OSH in Malaysia marks a turning point to further strengthen our national framework based on the 3K concept — Kebajikan (Welfare), Kemahiran (Skills), and Keberhasilan (Performance),” he added.
Rahman also noted emerging workplace challenges such as climate change, mental health, and the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which require more holistic and adaptive approaches.
The deputy secretary-general (operations) of the ministry, Sutekno Ahmad Belon, said the National OSH Awards 2024 serve as the highest recognition for organisations and individuals demonstrating excellence in OSH management systems.
He said “257 entries were received, with only 29 selected based on their performance, innovation, and compliance with OSH standards.”
The awards are in line with Malaysia’s ratification of Convention C187 (Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health), which promotes a culture of safety and health in all workplaces.
The event also saw the launch of the book “150 Years of Occupational Safety and Health Enforcement Evolution in Malaysia”, documenting the country’s long-standing journey in building a safe and sustainable work environment since 1876. - FMT
