Speaking at the National Institutes of Health Malaysia, Ong shared Singapore’s experience in handling the pandemic.
“We must be prepared to revisit our past assumptions and misunderstandings when a new virus arises. We have to be ready to change our minds and make necessary adjustments to (health) guidelines and policies,” he said.
Ong stressed the importance of following scientific studies and findings to understand the virus and formulate a public health response, adding that science must inform all decision-making.
Clear and honest communication from the government to the public was also essential to navigate the uncertainty of the pandemic, he said.
“When the road ahead is unclear, it is natural to be fearful and take precautions for the worst possible scenario,” he said. “As much as people do not like bad news, we have learnt it is best to be honest with them.”
Addressing the current situation in Singapore and Malaysia, Ong said there were good indications of recovery in both countries.
Saying the Omicron wave had peaked and was subsiding quickly in Singapore, he acknowledged that Malaysia had the transmission of the virus under control.
“Malaysia has done very well with its vaccination rollout and preparing the country to transition to the endemic phase,” he said, lauding the good relationship he has with his counterpart Khairy Jamaluddin. - FMT
